Recently, Eye Consultants of Texas founder, Phillips Kirk Labor, MD was honored by the World College of Refractive Surgery and Visual Sciences (WCRS). The organization notified him as being “unanimously honored” by its Board of surgeons as “a fellow of its inaugural class in recognition of his commitment and contributions to the Specialty of Refractive Surgery.”
With his acceptance, Dr. Labor receives WCRS Board Certification in Refractive Surgery. This makes him part of an elite group of less than 1,000 refractive surgeons chosen from a field of more than 280,000 ophthalmologists worldwide.
The WCRS was founded to represent Refractive Surgery as a standalone ophthalmic specialty. This includes surgery to correct “refractive errors”, such as nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), astigmatism, or presbyopia. The WCRS is the only global organization that offers credentialing for this specialty.
The WCRS also states that it “will be the most trusted resource for establishing a standard for qualifications and quality of care in our specialty with recognition by our peers in the medical profession and trust in the eyes of our patients.”
In notifying Dr. Labor, the organization also stated, “Your qualifications for this honor were vetted through a carefully designed year-long process and unanimous selection by an International Board of Refractive Surgeons.”
The organization further stated that his nomination was determined by his excellence in surgical skills “having mastered the practice of Refractive Surgery” and his accomplishments and leadership in teaching, education, and research.
In receiving this honor, Dr. Labor said, “Suffice to say, I am humbled by this nomination. Knowing that I’ve helped my patients achieve their best vision possible is recognition enough. To receive this type of validation from my peers is a truly unique honor. I am very grateful to the WCRS for this recognition and am so proud to be a part of this fine organization.”
Dr. Labor is already a double board-certified eye surgeon. In addition to his American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO) certification, he is certified by the American Board of Eye Surgery (ABES) in the fields of cataract and LASIK surgery. This requires more in-depth study and passing a rigorous process of testing by his peers. Dr. Labor chose this voluntary certification to continue to grow his expertise in order to better serve his patients.
