OptiLight, from Lumenis, is a truly unique, non-invasive light-based treatment for Dry Eyes we proudly offer to our Dallas/Fort Worth patients. It uses precise, intense broad spectrum light to address inflammation, a key cause of Dry Eye Disease due to meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). The first and only light therapy for Dry Eyes, OptiLight was specifically developed to reach the delicate contours of the treated area gently, safely, and effectively using patented optimal pulse technology.

What’s The Treatment Like?

OptiLight treats your eyes safely with control and precision. You’ll undergo a series of short treatments, (typically four sessions, 2-4 weeks apart) with minimal or no discomfort at all.

•  Each session usually takes only about 10-15 minutes.
•  A gel is applied on the treatment area and your eyes are covered with shields.
•  You may feel a warm sensation as light is applied.
•  Treatment is concentrated in an area below your eyes.

Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD)

Let’s start with the fundamentals. Dry Eye Disease is caused by a breakdown of your tear film, the thin film of tears that coats the surface of the eye. Not only does this keep your eyes moist and comfortable, it also creates a smooth surface for light to pass through, nourishes the front of your eyes, and protects them from injury and infection. In short, tear film is significantly important to how your eyes function and feel.

Your meibomian glands, located in your eyelids, make the lipid or oily part of your tears which slows evaporation to keep your tear film stable. MGD occurs due to an inflammation of these glands. This is considered the most common cause of Dry Eye Disease today.

Through Dry Eye Institutes of America™, Eye Consultants of Texas offers several options for treating MGD. OptiLight is continually becoming a game-changer, particularly for patients with more serious, chronic Dry Eyes.
